"Project Potluck" Asset Mapping

Potluck meals are a standard practice in United Methodist congregations. I'm sure many of you have participated in your fair share of them, and you don't need me to tell you what they’re all about. Everyone prepares to bring some dish that they know well, that is special to them. As a result, without a whole lot of top-down planning, when everyone comes together there is an abundance and incredible variety of food, and everyone walks away full and satisfied.

It's like a modern-day Miracle of the Feeding of the Five Thousand!

For this project, then, I'm launching from the metaphor of the potluck, to practice the abundance and variety of gifts and assets that we have in our church! Each of us brings special gifts and assets with us, even if we don't realize it. In 1 Corinthians 12, The apostle Paul even writes that this variety of gifts is part of what makes us God’s church!

So, during the remainder of October and the month of November (see dates below), I want to engage each of you in a process of Asset Mapping, to uncover these gifts in our church. Asset Mapping is a process that began among community developers at Northwestern University, but has been extended to all sorts of communities, including church congregations. As a process, each session of asset mapping includes identifying your personal gifts and assets (especially those gifts you might not normally think of as a blessing to the church!), as well as the assets of the church itself. From this, we will identify specific actions that could emerge. In the end, what you and I will discover is that, we do not lack what we need to do God’s work, and in reality we have an overabundance of assets and gifts to pursue God’s mission in faithfulness!

My goal is for at least 20 percent of you, the BUMC congregation, to have engaged with this process by the end of November. So please sign up for whichever session works best for your schedule.

This project is in partial completion of my requirements for ordination as an Elder in the United Methodist Church, so I am personally grateful that you would consider it. But more importantly, I believe this process will be profoundly helpful as we seek to be a congregation that can step into the future in God's strength and abundance.
